The AGM of the Friends of Skipwith Common took place on Thursday 10 November in Skipwith Village Hall. The Committee reported an active year, with 5 events focussing on various aspects of the history, archaeology, flora and fauna of the Common and over 400 hours of volunteering time put in by the Task Group. The five existing members of the Committee were re-elected for a further year. Other Members interested in playing a more active role in FOSC are invited to register their interest by email to skipcomfriends@gmail.com
Following the AGM, members of the Riccall Community Archive group gave a fascinating presentation on the Common in the Second World War when both Riccall and Skipwith Commons were used as a training airbase by the RAF. We learned about the orientation of the three runways and how, while much of what was on Riccall Common has disappeared as the land has returned to agricultural production, Skipwith Common retains many relics of its wartime past. Many thanks to the Archive Group for a really interesting view of a very significant period in the Common’s history.
